Intro to Poured Rubber Surfacing

Poured in Placer Rubber is a unitary safety surfacing system that has gained popularity in the last couple decades in the playground and sports arena. It has several advantages over traditional surfacing systems such as mulch or tiles. The rubberized surface forms one continuous layer without seams or edges. It can be installed to fit any shape area. It comes in many colors and can be combined to create different shapes and even logos. It is compliant with ADA standards (American Disabilities Act) and, with the right care, it can provide years of fun and play for your kids.

Most poured in place rubber systems consist of two layers:

  1. An impact attenuation layer, also called the base layer or the buffings layer (because it consists of tire buffings). This layer’s thickness goes hand in hand with the fall height of the equipment in the area. For example: A two inch base layer is typically adequate for equipment that has a 5 foot fall height.
  2. A wear layer that is typically made out of EPDM granules. This is the colorful layer that coats the base layer. Both layers are mixed with a polyurethane binder (Either aromatic or aliphatic glue) , and then poured and hand troweled right on site, hence the term “Poured in place rubber surfacing”. (Note: In the UK, it is referred to as “Wet Pour system”)

What damages poured in rubber surfaces

Like anything else, proper maintenance and repairs to your poured in rubber surface is essential to its look and performance. Although some vendors sell this expensive surfacing as a maintenance-free system, this is not entirely true. Anything out there needs maintenance. In the case of the poured rubber, here is a list of things that will degrade or damage your playground rubber surface:

  • Harsh UV rays degrade the polyurethane binders first used the mix the rubber granules. These binders need to ultimately be replenished to achieve system longevity.
  • High traffic areas such as slide exits and areas under swings will wear out faster than the rest of the surface.
  • In northern states, people complain that their rubber surface shrank, exposing a gap between the rubber and the surrounding grade. This gap typically leads to tripping hazards.
  • Vandalism and accidents can damage the surface. We have seen all types of damages resulting from stiletto heels to sharp chair and ladder legs. Landscapers and fencing companies call us all the time asking for tips to repair the rubber surface they have damaged.

Our poured in rubber Repair and Maintenance Products

Trassig Corp. (The owner of pouredin.com) has been installing and maintaining poured in place rubber surfaces in one of the harshest environments for over a decade. Based in New England, the company has developed a unique expertise in this field. Clients sought us out from all over the country to solve unique and not so unique problems they were having with their poured in place surface. The company then started doing more repairs to existing surfaces and installing new ones. Frustrated with the materials and tools available in the market, Trassig developed its own in-house products that were used and tried in the most demanding situations. A few years ago, the company decided to offer these products to other contractors and as do-it-yourself solutions.

The following are the products we sell:

Poured in Patch kits

These patch kits are to repair holes, cracks and gaps in your poured in rubber surface. We offer two types of path kits: a base layer patch kit, which is intended to repair the impact attenuation (buffings) layer. And wear layer patch kits. These are available in solid colors, a standard choice of color combinations, or a custom mix.

Poured in Rebinder

A clear top sealing product that rejuvenates your surface and rebinds the granules. This product is an essential component in a poured in place maintenance program. Overlooking it will lead to cracks and holes and ultimately system failure. Our rebinder will not darken the surface, is environmentally friendly and most importantly will not harden your surface.

Playground Liquid Rubber

A solution of last resort to poured in place rubber surfaces that are beyond patching or rebinding. This product will completely encapsulate your surface in a new liquid rubber layer and give your surface a brand new look.

Surface Impact Analyzer

How do you know if your poured in rubber surface is up to code? Does it meet or exceed the fall height of the equipment? There is only one way to know, and that is the ball drop test. We offer an easy to use system that provides you with the data you need to protect yourself and the children playing on your playgrounds.

Poured in place Sanitizer

When we read a study showing that public playgrounds are dirtier than public toilets, we sought to offer a sanitizing product to complete our line of poured in surface maintenance products. The sanitizing system hooks up to a regular garden hose and kills 99% of the germs commonly found on the surfacing. It can also be safely used on playground equipment as well.

Products for Poured in Installers

We are a one-stop-shop for poured in installers and contractors. We offer the best binders (Aliphatic and Aromatic), buffings, and EPDM granules. We also offer training for dealers and installers nationwide.
